What is DNS?
DNS stands for Domain Name System. It’s the system that tells the internet where your website and emails live. When someone types your domain name into a browser, DNS directs them to the right place. Without DNS, your domain is just a name with no directions.

The number plate analogy
Imagine your domain name is your ute’s number plate. Your website and emails are the ute itself. DNS is like the two screws that hold the plate on .. but here’s the thing, it’s not as simple as just two little screws!
DNS holds all the settings for your domain:
🔷Where your website lives (your hosting provider)
🔷Where your emails live (Google, Microsoft, or another service)
🔷Extra details like security policies and authentication codes
Basically, DNS connects users who visit your domain to the right services.
Why does your domain need DNS?
Without DNS, your domain can’t point to your website or email provider.
That means:
🔷No website for customers to visit
🔷No email for quotes or invoices
🔷No way to prove ownership or secure your domain
In short, DNS is the backbone of your online presence, but it’s very often neglected or disregarded until something breaks. Keeping it set up correctly is critical for your business.
Caching: why changes take time
Ever updated your DNS and wondered why it didn’t work straight away? That’s because of caching. DNS servers store information temporarily to speed things up.
When you make changes, it can take hours (sometimes up to 48) for those updates to spread across the internet. This is called DNS propagation.
DNS record types
DNS works through different record types, each with a job:
🔷 A Record – Points your domain to an IP address (your website server)
🔷 MX Record – Directs email to the right mail server
🔷 TXT Records – Used for security and verification (SPF, DKIM, DMARC)
🔷 CNAME – Points one domain to another (often for subdomains)
These records make sure everything goes where it should.

DNS isn’t just about directions. It also helps protect your business:
🔷 Stops email spoofing with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC
🔷 Helps prevent phishing attacks
🔷 Proves you own your domain for services like Google Workspace or Microsoft 365

DNS isn’t one single server .. it’s a global network. When someone visits your site, their computer talks to DNS servers all over the world to find the fastest route. That’s why DNS is so reliable, but also why changes take time to update everywhere.
